The Legend of Bass Reeves: Being the True & Fictional Account of the Most Valiant Marshal in the West by Gary Paulsen

Bass Reeves was born into slavery. And though the laws of his country enslaved him and his mother, when he became a free man he served the law with such courage & honor that he became the most successful federal marshal in the United States.

I'm reading this for next year's "Iowa Teen Awards"--I love Gary Paulsen's stories! So far, my only complaint: it could have used more editing as sometimes things are repeated unecessarily. Some people would probably find it too graphic but it is a vivid, realistic look at the time period.
